SEO vs. AI Search Optimization: what actually changed?
AEO and GEO describe useful areas of focus, but they do not replace SEO. The strongest strategy makes a business technically accessible, commercially relevant, credible, and easy to understand wherever customers search.
Traditional search often presents a ranked list of pages. Generative search can synthesize an answer from multiple sources and show supporting links. That changes the shape of discovery, but it does not eliminate the need for indexable webpages or trustworthy information.
Google’s current guidance is especially direct: there are no extra technical requirements or special schema types needed for its AI features. A page must first be indexed and eligible to appear in Search. Useful, original, people-first content and familiar SEO fundamentals remain the foundation.
Other answer platforms use different systems and sources, so no agency can guarantee a citation. The practical goal is to improve the evidence available about the business across its website and reputable third-party sources.
The terminology
Three labels for overlapping work.
SEO
Technical access, search intent, content, links, local signals, page experience, and authority designed to earn qualified visibility in search results.
AEO
Answer Engine Optimization: structuring accurate, useful answers around the questions customers ask, while making the source and expertise clear.
GEO
Generative Engine Optimization: improving the clarity, originality, corroboration, and retrievability that may help a brand appear in generated answers.
AI Search Optimization
Our plain-language umbrella for the technical, content, entity, reputation, and measurement work across search and answer experiences.
What to prioritize
Build evidence before chasing tactics.
Get indexed
Resolve crawl, canonical, sitemap, rendering, and technical issues so important pages can enter the search index.
Clarify the entity
Keep the company name, services, audience, location, contact information, leadership, and descriptions consistent and supportable.
Publish non-commodity expertise
Add first-hand frameworks, examples, tradeoffs, processes, and evidence that a generic summary cannot reproduce.
Earn corroboration
Develop real reviews, client proof, partnerships, links, coverage, and reputable profiles instead of manufacturing mentions.
Measure business actions
Track qualified leads, cited and referred visits where observable, priority-page visibility, branded demand, and lead quality.
Common questions
What AI-search optimization can—and cannot—promise.
Does schema make a company rank in AI answers?+
No. Structured data can clarify information and enable supported search features when it matches visible content, but Google says no special schema is required for AI Overviews or AI Mode. It is supporting infrastructure, not a shortcut to inclusion.
Should a business create an llms.txt file?+
Google says llms.txt neither helps nor harms visibility in Google Search. Other platforms may develop their own uses, but the higher-priority work is accessible content, strong technical SEO, useful expertise, and external credibility.
Can AI-search visibility be guaranteed?+
No. Generated responses vary by platform, model, query, context, location, and time. We can improve the quality and consistency of the evidence available about a brand and measure observable results, but we cannot control the final answer.
